Marathon runners are constantly looking for the perfect running shoes which will carry them through hundreds of hours of training. But, as there are many different running needs, it can be tough to declare one shoe style the best over all the others.
Depending on where you plan on running and what some of your preferences are, we have chosen a variety of top-quality shoes as the best running shoes for marathon runners.
Best Road Marathon Running Shoes: Brooks Ghost 11
If you are looking for an all-around road shoe to start pounding away at the miles, the Brooks Ghost 11 is an excellent choice. Brooks shoes have been a classic runner favorite much like ProForm treadmills, and its cushioned soles make road running or treadmill training far more comfortable. This shoe is also lightweight, thanks to a change in the midsole foam, keeping your feet from feeling heavy after miles of pounding away. You can find the Ghost 11 for $120.
Best Trail Marathon Running Shoes: Salomon S/Lab Ultra
The Salomon S/Lab Ultra caters to trail marathoners and ultramarathoners, as it has been carefully constructed to withstand the beating shoes receive on the trail. There are detachable inner support structures around the arch to give the midfoot and arch a more adaptable support. It also features an internal sleeve to keep your foot in place and reduce blisters. This sleeve is also flexible enough to allow your feet to swell over the course of a run. Currently, these top-notch shoes are priced at $180.
Best Budget Marathon Running Shoes: Saucony Cohesion
Bringing the price down while maintaining high-quality, we found the Saucony Cohesion to be an excellent road running shoe. There is good padding around the tongue and collar of the shoe, allowing for greater comfort and less rubbing movements. There is also a double-layered sole, with blown foam cushioning for comfort and a tougher rubber along the base to create a grippy layer which will hug the road. This shoe also features the classic Saucony mesh upper body, allowing moisture to escape. You can find this shoe for $60.

Best Cushion Marathon Running Shoes: Hoka One One Clifton 4
A natural shoo-in for the best-cushioned shoe is the Hoka One One Clifton 4. While it has the characteristic large foam bed most Hokas sport, the foam is a little firmer, allowing it to take more of a pounding. It is still a cushioned dream of a shoe, so those looking for comfort and durability should still enjoy the Clifton 4. Also, it has a rubberized bottom to add grip which also protects the soft layer of cushioning. You can find this light, cushioned show for $130.
Best Zero-Drop Marathon Running Shoes: Altra Escalante
The Altra Escalante is a zero-drop road running shoe. If you have not worn a zero-drop shoe before, this one is a great starter shoe. It has a flexible knit upper body which allows for natural movement of your feet. The midsole has been redone to give better bounce so that you don’t lose as much energy as your foot comes down to strike. While it appears sleeker than other Altras, the Escalante still has a roomy toe box. As Altra recently released the Escalante 1.5, the first run Escalante is currently on sale for $91.
